Clarify Your Calling with Authentic Market Discovery: a warm lightbulb with a heart-shaped filament
Why this course

Your people will tell you what they want

Many soulpreneurs build an offer from what they love, share it, and hear crickets. Your income comes from your market’s spending… not just from your passion or affirmations or great charm 😄

Clarify Your Calling with Authentic Market Discovery: title card with a magnifying glass and a lightbulb

This course takes a gentler way of finding out:

  • ✓Instead of asking whether people would buy your idea (they’ll be polite and say yes), you ask what they’ve already tried and bought.
  • ✓Conversations come first. Polls come later, to choose among the ideas those conversations gave you.
  • ✓You start with the people you can already reach, even a handful.
  • ✓Your launch can be two gentle messages, about a week apart.

To get clients, you must sell what others want (not just what you want).

(Before you fall asleep… I know that market research sounds dry, but as you’ll discover in the course, it’s an opportunity to have fun conversations with people you like, about what you’re interested in!)

What you’ll learn

What you’ll be able to do, step by step

Each module has short videos and a lesson document you can read or hand to your AI. Most modules also gather past students’ questions, with my answers.

  1. Module 1 · Begin with your energy and ideas

Know what you’d love to be paid for, and who you can already reach

List the work that energizes you, the people you can reach, the issues you could help with, and the formats people buy.

Then book two or three conversations with colleagues in your field (I call them nichemates).

  2. Module 2 · Easily Referrable Issues and outreach

Describe what you help with in words your audience uses, and invite them to talk

Narrow your topics to a few Easily Referrable Issues: issues so specific that a friend hearing them thinks, “I know someone who needs that!” Then check your wording against what people search for.

You’ll get real outreach posts and emails to adapt to your voice. If you’re too shy to post publicly, you can email five to ten supporters instead.

  3. Module 3 · Market Discovery Calls

Hold a conversation that listens instead of pitching

Use my questions to learn what people want, what they’ve tried, and what they’ve already bought.

You’ll get a Google Form for your notes, and a follow-up message to send afterward.

  4. Module 4 · Integrating your conversations

Turn your notes into patterns and first offer ideas

Use my integration spreadsheet and a few AI prompts to spot what keeps coming up, without getting overwhelmed.

You’ll also see where your audience is on the awareness spectrum, and leave with ideas for content as well as offers.

  5. Module 5 · Market discovery polls

Let your audience help you choose among your best ideas

Build a fair poll in Google Forms, with shuffled options so the order doesn’t sway the votes.

You can poll topics, titles, images, formats, prices and dates, with examples of each.

  6. Module 6 · Poll results and a gentle launch

Shape your offer from the votes, then share it lightly

Read your results, then build the offer around the best-voted topic, title and image.

Your gentle launch is two messages about a week apart. It’s also the most telling poll of all, because it asks whether people will buy.

  7. Webinar · More market discovery techniques

Find the overlap between what you love and what people pay for

How to find more people to talk with, and what conversations with colleagues reveal about gaps in your field.

It also covers testing interest with a waiting list or a free webinar before you build.

  8. Extra · Questions and examples

See how others worked through the hard parts

Answers to the questions students asked most, from niching to “I polled people, they didn’t buy… why?”

Plus two sample market discovery calls you can watch.

From students

What students loved most

When students write about this course, these are the moments they mention most:

  • ✓Finally describing their work in their audience’s own words. The Easily Referrable Issues lesson draws more responses than any other.
  • ✓Conversations that felt easy, even fun, and that turned some acquaintances into friends.
  • ✓Learning to ask what people have already bought, rather than whether they’d buy their idea.
  • ✓The mountain-and-river picture, which helped them see why good work wasn’t selling.
  • ✓Gentle launches, which students describe as feeling light.

These reflections come from students of earlier versions of the course.

“For me, my market discovery calls went far beyond the usual description of my demographic that I understand so well... it was about learning the words and resistances and delivery preferences that I actually had no idea about, and then was able to address in my program design and marketing.”

Jessica Jennings

“I used to get mad that people didn't seem to get what I have to offer. This gives me a clear structure to help me do my part of the work in respectfully meeting them where they are.”

KarinaStudent

“I felt very nervous about scheduling the niche mates calls, but I looked over my list and realized that I have some wonderful support people, so I chose a couple of them to ask, and they both replied yes almost immediately!”

George Kao

Hi, I’m George Kao

I’ve run a full-time business since 2009, and along the way, published what worked and what didn’t. What I teach soulpreneurs is how to build a business they love, one that feels deeply authentic, yet also quite light to build and run.

Over more than 150 launches of programs, services, and events, I’ve learned that without market discovery, rarely will a launch or service be successful. I still practice it in my own business, because what my market wants keeps changing by the year.

Is this for you?

A good fit if…

  • ✓You have offer ideas, or offers that haven’t sold the way you hoped
  • ✓You’d like to know what your people want before you build the next thing
  • ✓Your audience is small, or mostly friends and colleagues, and you’re wondering where to start
  • ✓You’re willing to talk with real people, even a handful

Probably not if…

  • ×You’d rather not talk with people. Conversations are the heart of this course
  • ×You want personal coaching or feedback. This course is recorded, and you work through it at your own pace
  • ×You mainly need help pricing and structuring an offer. That’s my Create Aligned Offers course
Enroll

By the end, you’ll…

  1. 1Know which of your interests people want from you, and which can wait.
  2. 2Describe what you help with in words your audience uses.
  3. 3Have held conversations where people felt heard, and you came away clearer.
  4. 4Have a fair poll that lets your audience help you choose.
  5. 5Have an offer idea grounded in what people told you, and a gentle plan for sharing your offer.

Questions

Before you enroll

Do I need a big audience?

No. You start with the people you can already reach, and the course shows you how to invite them even if your audience is tiny.

If you’re too shy to post publicly, you can email a few supporters instead.

How much time does it take?

The six core modules come to about six hours of short videos. With the webinar, the questions and examples, and some optional older segments, it’s closer to nine and a half.

Most of your time goes into the conversations themselves: the course suggests at least five over two or three weeks, at whatever pace fits your life.

Are these sales calls?

No. The conversations you’ll learn are not sales calls, and not a way to get people to approve your idea.

You listen for what people want, what they’ve tried, and what they’ve already bought.

What if people vote in my poll but don’t buy?

A poll only shows which of your options people prefer. It can’t tell you whether any of them is what they want, which is why this course starts with conversations.

The questions-and-examples module answers this exact situation.

Can’t AI just tell me what my market wants?

No, it’s not enough to do this with ChatGPT 🤖

AI can help you check your wording and sort your notes, and the course shows you how. What people will pay you for, you hear in conversations with real humans.

Will I get personal feedback?

The course is recorded, and it doesn’t include personal feedback.

Most modules include past students’ questions with my answers, and you can bring your own questions to my free monthly Q&A call.

Can I use it with my AI?

Yes. Give a module’s lesson document to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and work through the course together.
